Overview

The Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool (MCPCIL) offers university accredited postgraduate and undergraduate courses, as well as a series of study days that can be taken individually or as a short programme of study.

Additionally, there are programmes for qualified and unqualified staff as well as specialist days examining the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient.

In addition to the well established courses available, the Institute is also involved in a number of development projects which aim to develop palliative care education for all professionals.

 

Current / Future Developments in Learning and Teaching at the Institute

  • Development of a curriculum for Specialists in Palliative Medicine for the European Association of Palliative Care.
  • Development of a training programme in Palliative Medicine for Specialist Registrars from other disciplines (in conjunction with the Department of Postgraduate Medical Education in the Mersey Deanery).
  • The lead for Training the Teachers programme for palliative medicine. A European model which has been successfully delivered in a number of countries across the world and has its UK base in Liverpool. The course attracts trainees and specialists in palliative medicine from the UK and abroad and further development of this training will be a key objective of the Institute.
  • A four-week palliative care compulsory module on the medical undergraduate programme, co-ordinated by the Institute and currently undergoing formal evaluation as part of a PhD thesis.
