This popular programme has now been extended to include a set of eight study days which explore key topics relevant to the provision of contempory palliative care. The programme is flexible, allowing you to access it in a number of ways.

You can book onto individual study days and tailor them to your needs, book a short course of 4 days or alternatively book the full eight day programme.

 

About the Challenges in Palliative Care programme

This stimulating programme is facilitated by expert clinicians and invited speakers from the field of palliative care. It uses lectures and group work to examine key issues, encourage reflection and assist in improving effective clinical practice.

 

The study days

 

Short course 1 includes these four 1-day courses:

An Introduction to Psychosocial Aspects of Adult Palliative Care - Tuesday 22 February 2011
This day will explore attitudes towards death and dying, including the cultural and spiritual aspects impacting on the experience of life threatening illness. It will facilitate the exploration of frameworks for supporting staff working within a palliative care setting.
 
Loss, Grief & Bereavement - Tuesday 8 March 2011
This day will explore key concepts relating to loss, grief and bereavement at end of life. It will focus on the impact of loss for both patients and family examining current bereavement theories. It will also explore issues related to supporting pre and post bereaved children.
 
Communication Issues - Tuesday 29 March 2011
This day will explore the evidence base relating to the use of effective communication skills in patients with life threatening illness and their families. Examples of areas covered on this day will include, breaking bad news, handling difficult questions, dealing with collusion.
 
The Psychosocial Impact of Life Threatening Illness and the Application of Ethics - Tuesday 12 April 2011
This day will provide an opportunity for the practitioner to gain an understanding of the psychological impact of life threatening illness for both the patient and family. It will also explore the key moral, legal and ethical issues relating to this area including both the application and implications for practice.

 

Short course 2 includes these four 1-day courses:

 
Introduction to the Key Principles of Contemporary Palliative Care - Wednesday 14 September 2011
This day will provide an introduction to the history, philosophy and development of palliative care. It will explore the epidemiology, incidence and management of life threatening illness. Examples of areas which may be covered include cancer, MND, Heart Failure, Renal Failure
 
Pain - Wednesday 5 October 2011
This day will explore key principles relating to the assessment and management of pain in life threatening illness. It will focus on pharmacological and non pharmacological interventions. Examples of areas which may be covered on this day include analgesic options, anaesthetic interventions, CBT and complementary therapies.

Symptoms - Wednesday 2 November 2011
This day will examine the assessment and management of symptoms occurring in life threatening illness. Examples of areas covered on this day include nausea & vomiting, dyspnoea, fatigue, lymphoedema, oncological emergencies.
 
End of Life Care - Wednesday 23 November 2011
This day will discuss the ethical challenges faced at the end of life and examine the formal frameworks aimed at improving standards and quality of care. Examples of areas which may be covered on this day include the Mental Capacity Act, advanced care planning, Gold Standards Framework, Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient (LCP), Preferred Place of Care
