Palliative Medicine Training Course for Specialist Registrars

Specialist/Speciality Registrars and Specialty Doctors

Background

With the increase in the number of palliative care patients presenting across all medical disciplines it is increasingly recognised that all doctors should have experience in palliative medicine, which is currently reflected in the curricula for many Specialist/Specialty Registrars. The Palliative Medicine STEC in association with the Mersey Deanery has designed a programme for practical experience in palliative care open to Specialist/Specialty Registrars/Speciality Doctors from all disciplines.

About the course

This training course mixes 10 class based sessions with 10 clinically based sessions. The class based sessions will provide a background to contemporary issues in palliative care, advanced communication skills training and opportunities to set individual learning objectives. Clinical sessions will be supervised by a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at one of the Hospices across the Mersey region.

Learning objectives

The objectives for the course are:

     1. To improve knowledge and develop clinical skills in generic palliative care
     2. To develop communication skills for dealing with end of life issues
     3. To develop skills in approaching ethical challenges at the end of life

When is it

The course runs between September/October and the end of January and consists of :

1. An Induction Day
2. 3 days of Communication Skills Training (ACST Connected Programme)
3. Clinical experience in palliative medicine based on the training needs of an individual (usually 10 sessions)  These sessions will be at one of the specialist palliative care units on Merseyside.
