Centre for Communication Skills Education and Training Header

The Centre for Communication Skills Education and Training is based in the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute, University of Liverpool. Its mission is to drive up the quality and positive impact of communication in palliative, end of life care and in other areas of health and social care for the benefit of patients, families and those professionals and non-professionals who support them.

Good communication skills are a vital part of providing good clinical and compassionate health and social care and high quality education is vital to supporting its delivery.

The Centre for Communication Skills Education and Training at the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool brings together a wide range of high quality, evidence based and accredited communication skills education and training with the aim of driving forward improved practice in this vital area of health care.

Established in early 2017, the Centre for Communication Skills Education and Training is led by Susie Wilkinson, Executive Director, a founder and leader of the National Advanced Communication Skills Programme - 'Connected' - and Anita Roberts, Director (former Programme Lead/Zonal Advisor of 'Connected').

Its strategic aims are:

  1. To offer a holistic portfolio of high quality, evidence-based communication skills education and training provision
  2. To expand and develop this portfolio and expertise
  3. To further develop evaluation and research activity
  4. To provide a locus for development of the professional community
  5. To clearly articulate and promote this offer through the Centre
  6. To advocate for the importance of communication skills and investing in them
  7. To become a recognised centre of excellence

Courses are delivered by the Centre's established team of recognised communication skills facilitators, with clinical backgrounds in palliative care. They include core, intermediate and advanced level communication skills training, undergraduate medical education and commissioned and bespoke communications skills training.

The Centre for Communication Skills Education and Training is underpinned by a programme of academic research at the University of Liverpool and with national and international collaborators.

The first year of the Centre's programme, in 2017, includes:

- Advanced and intermediate communications skills programmes

- Training for Facilitators in Advanced Communication Skills; one course being held in Liverpool, the other in London

- National Communications Skills Seminar for communication skills facilitators

- Simulation Training

- Implementing research and education activities in the Serious Illness Care Programme UK.
