GMC announces new guidance for doctors on end of life care

Treating patients towards the end of life can be clinically complex and emotionally challenging and often raises difficult ethical and legal questions.  "Treatment and care towards the end of life: good practice in decision making" is new guidance produced by the GMC to help doctors deal effectively with this challenging aspect of medical care.  The guidance was developed over two years and involved extensive consultation with doctors, patients and their carers, family members and health care teams and in publishing the new guidance, the General Medical Council seeks to improve end-of-life treatment and care for all patients.

Please find below the article that appeared in the Daily Telegraph on 21st October 2009.  Chief Executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care, Tom Hughes-Hallett says:

''Marie Curie Cancer Care is fully behind the correct use of this pathway....while debate and criticism are valuable I believe it is important we need to scotch some myths...the pathway offers guidance on what to do, its not a straightjacket - the clinicians provide care to fit the needs of the patient.  The LCP is only as good as the teams using it and that is why we are in favour of mandatory training with regular updates''
